Las solicitudes de asilo han aumentado en el conjunto de la Unión Europea, mientras que en los países de la frontera sur —Italia, España y Grecia— han disminuido de forma significativa. Sin embargo, es precisamente en estos territorios donde se han intensificado las políticas de externalización de fronteras impulsadas por la Unión Europea, priorizando el control migratorio por encima de las cuestiones humanitarias y de los derechos de las personas migrantes y refugiadas.

En este contexto, Diray of hunger se sitúa en la frontera entre Melilla y Marruecos, uno de los enclaves más tensionados de la política migratoria europea. Lejos de construir un relato informativo o explicativo sobre el conflicto, la película propone una aproximación íntima y observacional a la experiencia de quienes viven atrapados en ese espacio de espera. Jóvenes migrantes subsaharianos sobreviven durante meses —a veces años— en el monte Gurugú, aguardando el momento de intentar cruzar la valla que separa África de Europa.

A través de una mirada cercana y sostenida, el documental intenta desplazarse de las imágenes espectaculares que habitualmente acompañan el relato migratorio para detenerse en los cuerpos, los gestos y las esperas que suelen quedar fuera de campo. La frontera aparece así no solo como un límite físico o político, sino también como un espacio suspendido, donde el tiempo, la identidad y la propia idea de futuro quedan profundamente alterados.

Asylum requests across the European Union have increased, while in the southern border countries —Italy, Spain and Greece— they have significantly decreased. At the same time, these are precisely the territories where the European Union’s border externalization policies have intensified, prioritizing migration control over humanitarian concerns and the rights of migrants and refugees.

In this context, Diary of Hunger takes place on the border between Melilla and Morocco, one of the most heavily contested enclaves of European migration policy. Rather than constructing an informative or explanatory account of the conflict, the film proposes an intimate and observational approach to the experience of those trapped within this space of waiting. Young sub-Saharan migrants survive for months —sometimes years— on Mount Gurugú, waiting for the moment to attempt crossing the fence that separates Africa from Europe.

Through a close and sustained gaze, the documentary moves away from the spectacular images that usually shape media representations of migration, focusing instead on the bodies, gestures and periods of waiting that often remain outside the frame. The border emerges not only as a physical or political limit, but also as a suspended space where time, identity and the very idea of the future become deeply altered.
